Review of Cat People (1942) by Chris S — 22 Feb 2012
This is one of the few films I've seen from this era that addresses the fact that most of their love stories were shallow and meaningless. The main character enters into one such groan-inducing marriage, and then later finds that he was never in love at all. Then the film follows up with a quite real and sweet love story between he and a childhood friend/coworker.
But as for the horror part, this film was also intriguing because it took on an almost Hitchcockian style of suspense in which the things not seen are far scarier. Ahead of its time structurally, Cat People easily holds its own among those in the genre today.
