Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Marcus W — 16 Apr 2009
Theatre is theatre and cinema is cinema. Attempts to turn one into the other seldom work. Theatre is usually a bunch of people in a room talking - great script/character work regardless. Cinema needs much more and that's why this film fails, because it cannot be opened up and stretched to fit the larger canvas that cinema provides.
Don't get me wrong, Taylor and Newman are great but if you were to take away all the scenes of people just talking there would be no film. It also features the most annoying children in history. This is one that should stay in the theatre.
