Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Jaye G — 12 Jul 2008
Gutting the movie of any references to homosexuality and replacing it with father issues doesn't really diminish the power of this movie. At it's heart it still about lies, liars and greed. Taylor and Newman are almost too pretty to be real.
She delivers one of the best performances of her career here. He's pretty good too, even if his accent isn't exactly spot on all the time. The supporting cast is excellent with Burl Ives as the domineering patriach and Judith Anderson as his long suffering wife standouts.
I listened to Tennessee Williams and Elizabeth Taylor biographer Donald Spoto's dvd commentary this time around. Fascinating background on the production, it's broadway roots and the script changes forced by the Production Code.
Highly reccommended.
