Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Richard D — 03 Oct 2015
A phenomenal, classy production of a play that's really badly neutered due to the interference of the Production Code. The whole center of the plot ... why Brick and Maggie are estranged and why Brick is drinking himself to death .
.. is quite frankly rendered more than a little nonsensical. That said, this is an amazing ensemble cast. Burl Ives in particular, reprising his role from the Broadway production, is so good I wish he'd acted in films more often.
Richard Brooks does not get much praise these days, but he was a fine director, especially at making literate films for adult audiences.
