Review of Casualties of War (1989) by Frances H — 02 Apr 2015
Well acted by a group of young actors who would go places, in an excellent screenplay that exposes a story based on a true incident, and shows the inhumanity and brutalizing influence of war, but doesn't let the perpetrators off the hook for that.
In the real incident, all of the soldiers raped the girl, but that would have been too much for a movie audience, who would have to have a hero. It was true that all the guilty got off with lighter sentences than those to which they had been condemned.
What the note at the end doesn't say was that the real soldier who was "Clark" in this film, who stabbed the girl, was later implicated and found guilty in the murder of a black soldier on a ship.
