Review of Casualties of War (1989) by Scotty J — 07 Jun 2006
Sean Penn, Michael J. Fox and the assured eye of Brian De Palma, this Vietnam war drama is both shocking and compelling viewing. Released in 1989 as a young boy, it was a headfuck that like Platoon stayed with me for many years.
Revisiting both films when I turned 18, I felt the same pain, confusion and anguish that I'd felt as that child, only now with more insight and a grounding of the world in which we live. Powerful stuff.
Made me thankful I'd seen a TV censored version of Deliverance at the age of 7. Could've turned out a real nutcase. "Gotta run, there's a voice calling me.".
