Review of Cast Away (2000) by Jonathan R — 05 Apr 2014
Robert Zemeckis' "Cast Away" is an odd curiousity of a film.
The scenes set on the island, which Tom Hanks is cast away on (hence the name), are some of the best pieces of filmmaking I've seen for a while. The isolation is represented perfectly, Hanks' acting was, dare I say it, far superior to eventual Oscar-winner Russell Crowe in Gladiator, and of course, there was the wonderful appearance of "Wilson".
However, following the end of that story, the following story of Kelly (Helen Hunt) and her confliction outstayed it's welcome by a good 10 minutes. It added so much gooey slop to the end that it made "Forrest Gump" seem hard-hitting, and did not fit tonally, ruining what could have otherwise been an absolute classic.
