Review of Casshern (2004) by Justin H — 29 Apr 2009
Um...what? Those were my thoughts throughout most of this film. Nothing is really ever explained at all. Why did a giant metal spike fall out of the sky and spawn a bunch of green-skinned replicant people? Why does nobody bat an eyelash at said spike until about an hour later into the movie--immediately after which point it explodes and teleports the hero to where it was? Why is there a gothic castle/robot factory out in the middle of nowhere that starts churning out an army of loyal automatons for the first person to step through the door? How is Tetsuya--the hero--"chosen by the lightning" (the metal spike), when his father had to drag him to the site and dip him in the pool of neo-cells before he came back to life? ESPECIALLY when the "lightning" spawned the evil replicants in the first place?! Gah!
If none of the above makes sense, watching "Casshern" won't do anything to clarify it. Don't get me wrong; the movie does have its high points. It has a very unique style, and is visually stunning, but the story is such an incomprehensible, muddled mess that I can't recommend watching this more than once, just for the eye candy.
