Review of Casper (1995) by Movie K — 19 Apr 2014

From the cartoon to the live action movie, not a bad adaptation. Good enough in its time for a family flick. Cathy Moriarty late father left her in the will a old big house which she feel is useless. She throw the deed into the fire and it reveal a secret message about treasure in there.

Her abused "boyfriend" Eric Idle have to go with her to the house and is spook by Casper the friendly ghost. Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd make a quick appearance and he tell them to call somebody else.

The demolition workers also left spooked. Casper see the TV ad on Bill Pullman been a ghost psychiatrist after his wife died. His daughter Christina Ricci has been moving around with her father. Casper travel through the cable and let Cathy see the tv.

She hire Bill to exorcise the house. Casper as usual spook Christina and Bill but next morning he make breakfast for her. The 3 ghost uncle Stretch, Fatso and Stinky who are mean and bully Casper. Casper have no memory of his past.

Christina like a boy whose girlfriend Jessica Weeson is a bully. The class want to hold the prom Halloween party at her haunted house instead of Jessica. Bill tries hard to talk sense to the trio ghost but he got drunk and fall to death.

Christina re-decorate Casper bedroom and the toys awaken his memory. His father was an inventor who try to make a machine to turn ghost back to human. Casper bring her to the secret underground lab. He can't find the switch to activate and reveal the machine.

Christina found it in a book. There's only one potion left. Cathy and Eric saw the ghosts leaving and follow Casper to the underground. She steal the potion while they are trying out the machine. Cathy plan is to make Eric dead and turn to ghost then he can go through walls to find the treasure.

But she crash her car and fall to death. She become ghost herself and took the treasure chest and kill Eric. Christina ask her if she have any unfinished business and she says no. She cross to the other side and vanished.

Casper treasure chest is a baseball and glove sign by 1900s baseball superstar. Just as they are about to start the process, Bill become ghost and follow the uncles back. He regretted been dead after remembering.

Casper give up the chance to revive Bill. Christina attend the party when the class arrive. Jessica and her boyfriend disguise as ghost trying to spoil the party but the trio uncle frighten them away instead.

Bill late wife Amy Brenneman become an angel and she grant Casper wish to be a human. He is a dashing man (Devon Sawa) and dance with Christina. Amy talk to Bill and say she has no unfinish businness hence she become angel and want him to carry on a proper life and not try to find her.

After the dance, Devon turn back to Casper and the class scram away. The rest continue their party.
