Review of Casino (1995) by Darron V — 01 Mar 2011
"In the casino, everyone is watching everybody else; the dealers are watchin the players, the boxmen are watchin the dealers, the floormen are watchin the boxmen, the pit bosses are watchin the floormen, the shift bosses are watchin the pit bosses, the casino manager is watchin the shift bosses, i'm watchin the casino manager, and the eye in the sky is watchin us all.
Another gripping gangster epic from Director Martin Scorsese. A masterful picture loosely adapted from a true story about the infiltration of Las Vegas casinos by the mob. Casino is Martin Scorsese at the top of his game, a brutally violent, romantically charged punch of sinful madness. It's Goodfellas in Las Vegas. Leave it Scorsese to construct the best film involving Sin City ever made, a sizzling hot classic that stands up with the best films of the 90's. A chilling portrayal of magnetic elements that lead up to complete madness, flawless execution of gangster life. Casino is symbolic of the Vegas lifestyle: you might come out on the winning end at first, but eventually you WILL lose everything. Explosively bloody, realistically portrayed, and entertaining on a grand scale Casino is a masterpiece that stands as just another classic in the legendary resume of Martin Scorsese.
Robert De Niro is back and gives another award worthy performance in yet another collaboration with Scorsese. He is chillingly convincing and achingly brilliant in this performance. Joe Pesci is back doing the things that made him a household name in Goodfellas. Sharon Stone gives a career defining performance in this movie. Hell even Don Rickles and Kevin Pollack make appearances.
I think it's worth noting that Martin Scorsese has labeled Robert De Niro as the best actor of his generation, are you gonna disagree?.....I don't. A masterpiece.
