Beneath all the subtleties of The Godfather characters, there are the Sam Rothsteins and Nicky Santoros who keep the mafia operating, and Scorsese pulls no punches to show that these people and their lives are anything but subtle.
Besides the fashion, De Niro played Rothstein much more akin a corporate CEO than a seasoned gambler running a casino, creating a persona unique in this genre of mafia films.
