Review of Casino (1995) by Elliott F — 06 Aug 2012
There are many things about Scorsese's Casino to admire, but for some reason, I can't flat-out love it like I do his other films. Not only does it seem to be Scorsese on autopilot, but I get the feeling that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci are barely trying in their performances.
Sharon Stone, however, comes off very well, in a loud performance (that's not a bad thing) as De Niro's gold-digging wife. She inexplicably got nominated for Best Leading Actress for a supporting role, but she's still quite good in the role.
The rest of the film feels like Goodfellas 2.0, except not nearly as good. If this were from any other director, it'd probably be a masterpiece.
