Review of Casino (1995) by Nick M — 18 Aug 2012
People may not agree with me, but I find Casino to be one of Martin Scorcese's best films of his career. Don't get me wrong I love Goodfellas (almost equally as much) and Taxi Driver but I happen to be writing a review on this film, and it's pretty outstanding in it's own light.
It always shocks me to find that this didn't get higher ratings than it did because I find Casino to be one of the best films in cinema. Yes it has a running time of 2 hours and 59 minutes but that doesn't make a difference to me, it never really does unless if the movie is really not meant for that time span or in other words so boring that I can't watch that much of it.
But it works for Casino, because you never miss a fraction of the story that Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci are telling you. Many people compare this film to Goodfellas and say it's almost identical, style-wise and story.
I find that false, I mean sure it's similar to the way Goodfellas is put together and it kind of has the same shooting in the head and Joe Pesci beating people to death with his anger, but overall I find a very small resemblance.
I admire this film, I can't help myself I get excited whenever I see the cover of the movie. Pesci and DeNiro are great (as usual) in it but another great actor that stands out is Sharon Osborne, which I never really thought I would find myself saying.
I always found her very attractive, but I never found her to be anything that caught my eye like she does with her character Ginger in this one. I mean she gives a raw straight on role, that's even hard to watch at times, I mean hell, there are scenes where she screaming at either DeNiro or Pesci and there's one particular scene where she gets pushed down the stairs because of it.
It's not just because of the screaming, but..we can leave that out for now. Anyways, it shocked me to find out that this movie was made in 1995, because the film has such an 80s vibe to it, probably has something to do with the fact that the movie is supposed to take place from the 70s-80s, so that just means that Scorcese is a fucking master at making time pieces.
There are just times in this movie that shock me with how detailed every shot is and it makes me wonder how long that would have taken to film, I mean you get the whole everything, cars blowing up, close ups on dice, casino tables, slot machines, etc.
You get a taste of everything. The difference from Casino to Goodfellas is simply the title. Casino is more about the money, greed, and drugs. While Goodfellas is about money, gangsters, and drugs. No, but seriously, Casino focuses more on the well.
.casino side of it, while Goodfellas the gnarley gangster business. Let's just say they're both different in their own way. Either way I love both of the films, I love Martin Scorcese and I give Casino 100%.
