Review of Casino (1995) by James M — 11 May 2013
Apparently there is a movie where Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct) can almost act. Unfortunately, she seems to be too comfortable in her role as the whack-job crack-addict wife of a mob boss. Otherwise, this movie is just another well made film in a long line of collaborations between director Martin Scorsese (Shutter Island) and his leading man, Robert de Niro (Machete).
It's not Scorsese's best film (see also 'The Departed'), nor is it de Niro's finest performance (see also 'The Godfather: Part II'), but it is certainly a solid film. In addition to de Niro and Stone, Joe Pesci (Goodfellas) turns in another standout performance.
It's a great mobster movie for those who are fans of the genre, but anyone who has an appreciation for Scorsese's work or enjoys de Niro on screen will enjoy it as well.
