Review of Casino (1995) by Dan V — 03 Aug 2013
My favorite Scorsese film. I was speaking with a friend about Gangster films, and he said that every gangster film was the same. same themes, same messages, same story. that's partially true. after that, I started thinking about the significance of a good gangster film.
every Gangster story by Scorsese have the same themes, but what makes a great Gangster story is the way people find new ways to tell those themes. whether Ford Coppola's crime films have themes about "family", and Scorsese's films have a theme about "violence and arrogance".
what distinguishes Scorsese's gangster films from others is that he tells these stories with restlessness and heart-pumping situations. he tells Gangster films with realism. he shows what Gangster's do behind doors.
that it's more complicated than killing people off in a few seconds, its that there's a certain order in the mafia world. everything has to be precise. no mistakes. and that's what film shows.
what can happen when mistakes are made in this type of lifestyle.
