Review of Casino (1995) by Brandon O — 17 Jan 2015
One of my personal favorite films, up there with "Good Night and Good Luck". If nothing else, Casino has one of the greatest casts of all time. James Woods puts on a chilling performance as a poetic lover yet dangerous, unpredictable pimp, and Sharon Stone places an incredibly emotionally complex train wreck materialist (and SPOILER ALERT Ace's eventual downfall) as naturally as I can imagine she could have.
De Niro and Pesci by the time this film was made knew exactly who they were as actors and brought their respective A games. I love the creative, borderline absurd moments (FBI plane spying on Nicky for so long runs out of gas and needs to land on golf fairway during an important interview for Ace), the power games of the casino, and the psychologically nuanced characters.
MASTERPIECE.
