Review of Cashback (2007) by Craig B — 05 May 2009
Cashback is about Ben (Sean Biggerstaff,) an artistic insomniac who copes with his failed love life by pretending he can freeze time. Meanwhile, he lets opportunities in the real world slip by.
I like this movie, and I suppose one of the reasons is the concept itself; when I was a kid, I had very similar fantasies, and wondered about the ability to freeze time, and marveled at the possibilities it presented. In this vein, I'm a little disappointed that director Sean Ellis doesn't explore the concept further. The main character spends most of his time disrobing women and avoiding arguments. Sure, Ben is an artist, and the excuse Ben uses to explore his pervy fantasies is a love of the female form. Still, the excuse feels like a lame coverup to introduce a lot of nudity into the flick.
On top of that, a few of the characters are over-the-top and the script isn't particularly surprising. Cashback runs like a typical romantic comedy with a few inspired twists thrown in. Ellis compensates for this defect with beautiful cinematography.
