Review of Cashback (2007) by Kyle E — 09 Aug 2009
Prepare for a mind grenade. "Cashback" is one of the most bizarre movies I've ever watched. And for ninety-minutes of it, you'll really enjoy the film. The film starts out with Ben Willis, a soon to be art graduate whom is going through the worst break up of his life. Through his struggles, he develops an ability to freeze time thanks to lack of sleep. He takes a night shift job at the local super market and suddenly his creative imagination runs wild. Confused yet? Well you should be.
Their are two major problems I had with "Cashback", the first simply being: no explanation of his ability. Ben is able to freeze time at his leisure and for as long as he wants, but you don't ever understand how he's grown accustomed to this unique power. It provides for an interesting film sure, but I wanted to know more about this ability of his.
The second problem is the downfall of this film: a weak ending. While I was intrigued during ninety-minutes of this movie, the last fifteen minutes of the film is shattered by a generic ending. The film could have pulled an epic "twilight zone" ending, which would have fit the feel and tempo of the film, but instead the writer/director decide to play it safe and keep things at medium pace.
An interesting film that despite a few misfires, is not half bad. Worth watching, perhaps you'll get more out of it then I did?
