Review of Cashback (2007) by Natalia E — 09 Jan 2011
Cashback tells the story of a young art student,Ben. Struggling with a severe case of insomnia after breaking up with his girlfriend, he decides to pass the time in which he would otherwise be sleeping by taking up the night shift at a grocery store. It is there where he eventually develops feelings for one of his co-workers,Sharon and soon discovers that he has the ability to freeze time. During the moments where time is frozen,he walks around the store undressing women to sketch them, as he has always had the upmost respect and admiration for the beautiful female form.
I enjoyed Cashback for many reasons. Firstly, I felt that the combination of the licentious humor, the ever so subtle element of sci-fi, and the emotional draw involved with the protagonist made for a very quirky and unusual romantic comedy. The secondary characters involved served successfully as hilarious comic relief, including his non-sensical and almost disturbingly amusing boss, his two prankster co-workers, and his sex-driven best friend. While funny, I also felt that Cashback delivered a light-hearted message in an un-original way. I enjoyed watching the film through Ben's perspective on the world, particularly enjoying his artistic appreciation for women.
With it's outstanding cinematography, clever editing, strong plot, and flawless acting, I recommend Cashback as film that it not worth missing out on.
