Review of Cashback (2007) by Jessica G — 16 Jul 2011
Cashback is a film about the heartbreaks and rewards of finding love. Aspiring artist Ben Willis suffers from insomnia after separating from his girlfriend, and trades in his waking extra hours for a wage at the local Sainsbury's. There, he passes his shifts by freezing the moments, and appreciating the elegance within them.
A film that chooses to portray the beauty hidden between seconds has a lot to prove stylistically. The scenes in which Ben wonders alone through the moments live up to any expectations. His focus on the female form accounts for some explicitly picturesque routines.
Cashback has been criticised for its crude nature, but this film is one that searches only for allure. Lasting just over an hour and a half, it's perfect for the 'thinker' in all of us. Best watched at a godforsaken hour in the morning, Cashback provides the viewer with plenty to think about as the closing moments pass by.
