Review of Case 39 (2009) by Melanie C — 21 Jan 2012
On the surface, 'Case 39' looks like your run-of-the-mill supernatural thriller. Once you take the plunge and begin watching it, that perception is verified. The film starts out strong, as Renà (C)e Zellweger's good-natured social worker character is on a mission to save a young girl from her parents' wrath.
Midway through the film, the plot turns, and more a more generic storyline results. Littered throughout 'Case' are tired and overused scares (loud noises, sudden camera angle movements, etc.) that don't add much to the fear factor, and the "twist" can be seen a mile and a half away.
From an acting standpoint, Zellweger does alright considering she is not much of a lead actress, but the material she has to work with is below average at best. Considering the genre it's in, 'Case 39' is not nearly as good as recent peers, and is only worth watching to say you've seen it.
