Review of Case 39 (2009) by Gabriel C — 19 May 2012

Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger stars in this terrifying supernatural thriller about a social worker who has been assigned the unusual and disturbing case of Lillith Sullivan, a girl with a strange and mysterious past. When Emily opens her home in an attempt to help Lillith, it turns into a deadly nightmare she may not survive. Renee Zellweger takes a break from the cheesy, cliché rom-coms and stars in a chilling horror movie. The story is good but it?s not the best horror story in the bunch, as it becomes victim to being way too predictable. The characters were written okay but most of them didn?t do anything too special to make them stick in your mind after watching the movie except for Lillith, who was fantastically played by Jodelle Ferland. The acting was great, Renee Zellweger and Jodelle Ferland were brilliant as their characters as was the rest of the cast.

The special effects were very good and the writing and direction were good and well but it failed in the one department it depended on: scares. It wasn?t really scary in the slightest. There were one or two scenes that were a little creepy but it was nothing scary (though I?m not easy to scare so other people might find it scary). Overall, it?s a good movie and it?s definitely underrated.

First of all, it must be noted what a pleasure it is to not see Renee Zellweger do another cheese-tastic romantic comedy and do a horror as it really paid off, she was great as Emily. Jodelle Ferland (who played Sharon in Silent Hill) was brilliant and quite creepy as Lillith. The cast did a great job playing as their characters and they played them convincingly. I did like the movie and I thought it was good but the one thing I didn?t really like was the predictability but that doesn?t bother you a lot as the scare scenes are done very well. I enjoyed watching Case 39 more than I thought I would and I would advise people to watch this. Don?t expect anything award-winning because you?ll be disappointed but if you want a movie to watch in the dark, this is it. Even though it?s a good movie, it?s one of those movies that you?ll watch once and never watch again. It?s a decent movie. The cast and crew did a good job in making Case 39. I hope to see Renee Zellweger in more horror movies like this!
