I think the themes of isolationism, romance, intrigue and sacrifice make this film timeless. The dialogue is incredible and supported by the enormous amount of quotes from this film that have worked their way into the American mainstream.
There are constant examples of this from the Simpsons to Cinema. The political allegory can not be denied as Rick represents a reluctant America unwilling to become involved, only looking out for himself, only to find that circumstances force him to do what is right and join the fight against evil.
The lighting is superb as well and I understand the outrage against colorizing this masterpiece. As others have stated the chemistry between Bogart and Bergman is gripping, but so is the chemistry between Bogart and Rains.
An undeniable classic and a must see for all film buffs regardless of age or national origin.
