Review of Casablanca (1943) by Gavin D — 22 Sep 2012
The movie begins with adventurous music and cheap special effects and a campy setting and I begin to wonder if this is a comedy, if I am somehow watching the wrong movie. But I meet Rick, and I meet Ilsa and I listen to "As Time Goes By" (although it is forbidden), and I am in love.
This is a movie, and if it were the only movie out there, I wouldn't mind a bit. Casablanca is everything it is cracked up to be and more. An accidental masterpiece, yes. Yet a masterpiece nonetheless.
