Review of Casablanca (1943) by Carol H — 06 Mar 2015
Perfect. A friend of mine persuaded me to watch it in colour on blu-ray and it simply isn't right. This is the greatest film ever made and without equal. A readily understandable and accessible plot set against the backdrop of WWII.
The characters are all so full of detail and depth. There isn't a single character in the film that doesn't add something to the story or make themselves as equally fascinating as the chief protagonists.
It is impossible to watch this film and not laugh, smile and get emotional in the space of 90 minutes. A brilliant display of romance, war and nationalism. Bogart is rightfully lauded for his portrayal of Rick, but Bergman is equally brilliant.
Henreid and Rains are probably my favourite characters. Victor's unbridled passion in the cause and determination to fight is thrilling, whereas Renault's one-liners provide much hilarity. I love the dry tones of Rains and Bogart, mixed with the beauty of Bergman and the passion of Henreid.
Each scene is memorable, adding something to the film and plot. Just a perfect film.
