Review of Casablanca (1943) by Akiko A — 25 May 2015
'Casablanca' appeals to every generation of film lovers due to it's insanely well written story about Rick Blaine (played by the legendary Humphrey Bogart) with political connection in Casablanca where he runs a night club.
Once a rebel fighter, he now runs a different kind of operation where people can purchase documentation to escape to America. Captain Renault played by the infamous Claude Rains tries to keep an eye on Rick's operation with a bit of a sense of humor.
The club attracts a wide variety of patrons but to find Victor Lazlo and his wife Ilsa in his club brings back conflicting memories for Rick. He was once very much in love with Ilsa. She does everything she can to convince him that he must help her and Victor get papers to get out.
What turns out as a harmless flirtation to get papers for Ilsa becomes much more complicated as her feelings for Rick become all too real. Victor has a price on his head due to being a rebel leader, so getting him out become an ordeal.
In the end Ilsa must decide between her husband & Rick, as Rick risks everything to get them out. Ilsa makes the choice that makes Rick's day and leads to his ultimate sacrifice. One of the best films ever.
