Review of Cars 3 (2017) by Tom M — 17 Jun 2017
A return to form after following the critically bashed Cars 2 (2011). We find ourselves following Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) quite a few years after the events of Cars 2. Lightning is getting a bit older and after a new rookie named Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) consistently keeps beating him using new top of the line technology not to mention getting in a huge wreck, Lightning ponders retirement.
He does decide to come back with the help of new Rust-eze owner Sterling (Nathan Fillion) and his new trainer Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) Lightning tries new ways to get faster. The film very much is the passing of a torch which I won't spoil here, but Lightning's relationship with the late Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) is really a main centerpoint here.
While Cars 2 failed to have any emotional background this movie hits much closer to home like the first film did. It isn't perfect with some pacing issues in the middle of the film, but the characters we actually care about (sorry Mater) are in the forefront here.
It's a nice film and a good ending (from what I'm assuming) to the Cars trilogy.
