Review of Cars 3 (2017) by Dan F — 06 Aug 2017
Cars 3 feels like a true sequel to the original Cars; overlooking the absurdity of the spy pastiche second instalment and dialling back on the comedy sidekicks (Mater is a glorified cameo following his headlining of Cars 2), this trilogy closer completes the story of McQueen's career by- literally in one child-distressing scene- flipping his journey upside down.
He's old now, lagging behind a new generation of "hi-tech" racers, lead by brash, arrogant Jackson Storm (who could do with suffering McQueen's Radiator Springs humbling). After a cataclysmic failure, McQueen starts to retrain, with old and new methods- going back to the legends of his late inspiration, Doc Hudson, and the future with the naive and enthusiastic Cruz Ramirez, into a world of number crunching and high end technology.
The film goes on a real journey, and the characters may not travel the globe like before but they cover more ground in a smaller, charming and funny story. Beautifully animated as always, Pixar deliver a satisfying sports coming of age drama to a much maligned (critically) but much loved (children, who matter more) franchise.
