Review of Cars (2006) by Jason V — 27 Jun 2012
Cars gets a bum rap as the least of the Pixar films. And, to be fair, it is the least of them...but when you're in such distinguished company as Toy Story, Monster's Inc. and Finding Nemo, someone has to bring up the rear.
However, this is also like asking which of Michael Jordan's NBA championship teams is the "worst." It's all semantics, really. Any initial concerns that Cars is too "insider-y" for the non-racing fan is quickly disposed of after the opening race.
In its place is a, yes, obvious story and PG romance played as predictably as possible...but we come to like the car characters so much, it doesn't really matter. Could some of the supporting characters be beefed up? Sure.
Could there be more laughs? Possibly, but I wonder if that would have destroyed the essence of what Cars is: a story about a person learning to be someone else. The opening race is simply awe inspiring; nothing else in the film can come close.
