Review of Cars (2006) by Elyse H — 08 Apr 2014
If you are past the age of breastfeeding and pooping in your pants then you have little excuse for liking this. I predict I may face another backlash similar to the one received after my 'Wall-E' review but I just don't see why this appears to have branded like it's one of the more successful Disney films.
'Cars' must have had a steering wheel lock attached because it was clear this soppy story was only ever going to head in one direction. Yes, animated films are designed to have an happy ending but does it have to be so predictable.
As for the humour, well, it barely ever gets out of first gear, showing heavy reliance on childish dialogue and poor visual gags. An animated film without humour has either got to have great emotion or an intellectually stimulating plot.
This movie stalls in search of all these elements. Furthermore, I have noticed a common trait in recent animated movies to chuck in the cultural stereotypes as characters (How often have you seen the ghetto, ethnic minority character speaking slang non-stop?).
Admittedly, 'Cars' is not the worse culprit but it follows the trend. In conclusion, 'Cars' quickly accelerates with the initial race scene but after experiencing a few corny one-liners and the childish atmosphere, watching this soon became a drag.
