Review of Cars 2 (2011) by Dylan N — 06 Jul 2013
Though Cars 2 has "blatant sequel cash in" scribbled all over it in Larry the Cable Guy's hand writing, one would still hope that one of the greatest film studios around these days would at least me able to muster up an enjoyable, light hearted flick that goes down easier than your average Disney channel fodder... but alas, the viewer would be mistaken.
Here we have a movie that is so focused on bright colors, ludicrous action sequences and a buck toothed tow truck constantly reminding the audience "how funny that is right thurr", that any semblance of Pixar's greatness, aside from technical prowess, appears to have fallen by the wayside. The story is there, but it's some sort of incomprehensible spy tale that hardly any viewer could possibly follow, let alone find much pleasure in. The characters and laughs found in your average Pixar film take a back seat here to explosions and a "who-done-it" twist filled formula; which could easily be figured out by anyone who has reached the half way point and find it some what infuriating that our heroes are so clueless.
While it's hardly a bad film, it's just incredibly mediocre; which is almost more insulting somehow. I'm just bummed that it finally happened: Pixar let us down. I hope that this is due more to Disney's influence and not of their own doing.
The teaser for Pixar's next film, Brave, was released alongside Cars 2. Instantly appears to have much promise. Bring back the second to none story telling and lovable characters with this one, Pixar, and we'll forgive you... just this once.
