Review of Cars 2 (2011) by Lee D — 30 Aug 2014
I really never had an interest to see cars 2 once I got a look at the trailer for the film. I loved the original cars film, the animation, the story, it was just an interesting idea to me. when I heard they were making a sequel to cars I thought " okay not the Pixar sequel I was hoping for (i wanted the Incredibles 2) but they've done well on the toy story sequels thus far so we'll see.
" needless to say though, when I saw the teaser trailer , revealing the spy car angle to the story I knew it was going to be Pixar's first major flop. its just didn't sound like a Pixar idea (more like one of those straight to DVD Disney sequels).
the other day, however, I was flipping through the channels and cars 2 was on the TV and I figured, why not I'll watch it (seeing how there was nothing else on). While it definitely wasn't a success it wasn't actually as bad as I had anticipated (and trust me I had extremely low expectations).
there were a few chuckles here and there but not the level of clever humor that Pixar is well known for. the story was all over the place, between one story arc with lightning McQueen and a rival race car and one with Mater and the spy cars and his feelings regarding his own personality and such.
The funny part is that there was a good element that could've been explored in a good way with Mater but instead of doing it in a smart and heartfelt way (something more akin to the first film perhaps) they chose to go with the ludicrous spy car angle as the vehicle (no pun intended) for that story element and it just took the film down to a lower level for me.
now keep in mind that the movie isn't something that's terrible for kids (trust me kids will love this) ,but when you come to expect an all around enjoyable experience for both adults and kids like I have when it comes to Pixar, then this definitely falls short.
all in all I'd say this is definitely Pixar's worst but its not bad for kids and it isn't a total pain to watch so I'd say if you haven't seen it yet and find it on Redbox or the TV then give it a try.
you might find more in it to like than I did.
