Review of Carrie (2013) by Brandon C — 30 Jul 2015
It wouldn't have taken much to make this a good movie, but in the few ways that it deviated from the source material made it make less sense. Making Carrie into some kind of Jean Grey traumatized teenage girl was kind of stupid.
She realized too early she had telekinetic powers and used them to goof off, we really didn't need that. The other real problem with this movie is Julianne Moore as the mother, in the book she is evil, she is a deranged woman using the worst interpretation of Christian faith to torture her daughter, she does not see her daughter as human but as the living embodiment of her sin.
But in this retelling Julianne Moore is as much a tragic character as Carrie, she is not an evil woman, she is mentally disturbed woman. Yes she has failed Carrie as a mother, but first society failed Margaret White.
But I will finish with a compliment, Judy Greer is great in this movie.
