Review of Carrie (2013) by Luke R — 10 Apr 2014
Carrie (Moretz) is bullied by her classmates. To quote the school (it seems) "Carrie White Eats Shit". Back at home, her mother (Moore) is abusive and obsessed with her religion, an obsession she pushes onto Carrie also. After a harrowing event when she has her first period, one of her bullies, Sue Snell (Wilde) realises things have gone too far, and with her boyfriend, sets out to make amends. However, in the height of emotion Carrie has discovered she has power, a lot of power. Power that's liable to be devastating if she's pushed too far.
First off, Moretz was a mistake for the film. Having not seen the original but having seen clips it does look more well cast in terms of the lead. Now, Moertz is one of my favourite actresses, and she plays the part superbly. BUT! There is no way a girl as attractive as her would be bullied in that way. Standing out from all her peers in the film as the most gorgeous cast member means that this film makes little sense. However, as I say, she is sublime. The prom is brilliant, the ending superb and the alternate ending worth catching if you pick up the blu ray.
The film was really fun! And if you can get over the minor hitch of the lead, it's a thriller well worth seeing! Being a big Stephen King fan I love it when his films are adapted into cinema, and hope that as Carrie was his first novel, so will Carrie be the first in a tsunami of new King adaptations hitting the screen! 8/10.
