Review of Carrie (2013) by Garrett N — 30 May 2014
Whenever they remake a classic, critics pounce on it with...well...criticism. The original Carrie is an outstanding film that still gives me shivers up the spine. So naturally, I was critical of the remake before I even watched it.
Although it hasn't gotten excellent ratings, I don't think it's all bad. It starts off slow. They've set it in the current day, with the use of smartphones. Chloe Grace Moretz, the lead, plays the role of the innocent, anxious and closeted Carrie rather well.
I thought at the beginning that they were following the original by every single line of the script, which I always look at unfavorably. However, I was pleasantly surprised that they added in more severe scenes of horror as the final scene set in.
It wasn't a direct copy of the original like I had imagined. And yes, it scared me! Remaking a classic is always a brave and bold move, but they did it justice. Obviously, the original Carrie is still number 1 in my books.
But I have to give this credit for originality and reinventing something from the '80's as best they could.
