Review of Carrie (2002) by Noah N — 22 Apr 2014
'Carrie' (2013) is a modernized version of Steven King's classic story, which thankfully lacks the embarrassing cheekiness of the 1970s. Though there is no major difference between the many versions of this story, there will be a lot of critical fans of the original 'Carrie' (1976) who will complain that this is just another 'unnecessary' horror remake.
Yet on a personal level, I believe Kimberly Peirce did a fine job directing and somewhat bestowing this project. Chloë Grace Moretz would not be my first pick for the role of Carrie White, but she does the best job out of all the other teens portrayed in this movie.
Moretz does not grasp the height of intensity Sissy Spacek rendered in her performance as Carrie, but it is Julianne Moore who really deepens the character of Margaret White (Carrie's mom) more than Piper Laurie did in the original.
This movie is so foreshowed by it the original that it is almost impossible not to compare the two. As a part of the audience, we set certain expectations for the movies we watch, and well for 'Carrie' (2013) I got everything I wanted: blood, mystic powers, and youth apprehension all rolled up into the all-time bully story.
