Review of Carolina (2003) by Maya P — 27 Nov 2007
As charming as the film is, it doesn't get any further than 'average chick flick' status. Julia Stiles gives a by-the-numbers performance as the title character, a level-headed woman trying to get beyond the boundaries of her down-to-earth, somewhat white trash, family.
Shirley MacLaine is the film's saving grace as her larger than life, foul mouthed grandmother. Edward Atterton is a likeable best friend and love interest for Carolina, and Jenifer Coolidge appears in a brief (and lackluster) cameo.
While the movie is somewhat enjoyable, you just can't help but see the potential that it has to be something much better than what it is ... an average romantic comedy and nothing more.
