Review of Carol (2015) by Bob F — 09 Jan 2016
I want that 2 hours of my life back. Carol deals with an important and emotional subject. But unless you find watching grass grow, paint dry, or water boiling fascinating, this movie is a disaster. The pace was so agonizingly slow that I regularly checked my pulse.
If there is a hell it would be being forced to watch the slow, endless, ponderous, looks of love and longing between Cate Blanchett and Roony Mara for eternity. The look of the film is wonderful, as in the directors previous Far From Heaven his recreation of the 1950's is award worthy.
No doubt a lens has never been crafted that doesn't portray Ms Blanchett as drop dead gorgeous. And yeah, yeah, I know, its going to win tons of awards and the critics love it. But I just wanted to get the hell out of the theater.
So, maddeningly, slow. And I sat through a 10-hour marathon of LOTR in the theater no problem. Cate Blanchett's stupid, stupid, choices, Roony Mara's empty and vacant personality, the portrayal of every man as an idiotic interruption, and the young daughter as a victim of a selfish mother who couldn't keep it in her skirt long enough for the divorce to be finalized.
Go ahead. Give it the academy award. But that will be politics not cinema. I'm still trying to wake up. 2 yawns way, way, down.
