Review of Carol (2015) by Alonso A — 05 Feb 2016
Todd Haynes has made a career out of his post-modern approach to formalism, and Carol might be his greatest achievement to date. In technical aspects, the film is flawless. The cinematography and the production design make the setting and the atmosphere of the music feel vivid, the music flows with finesse and elevates each moment, the acting is plain stellar, as the chemistry between Mara and Blanchett feels organic, each look and each smirk bearing significance in an overall muted and contained narrative.
Haynes direction is elegant, and knows when to sit back. The story just submerges you in this compelling situation where emotion is implied, and when shown, it feels earned and marvels. Carol is class.
