Review of Carol (2015) by Keegan M — 11 Feb 2016
Todd Haynes' adept direction overcomes a by-the-numbers romance, which -despite solid performances by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara- purports an emotional bond, but seldom realizes it's potential.
Instead the audience is left for most of the runtime to wallow in a sea of glances and half-hearted discussions between the leading couple. An easy emotional tear in the relationship comes in the form a divorce, and much of the ensuing fallout seems forced; notwithstanding a fantastic scene stealing performance from Blanchett during the deliberations.
Some superfluous sequences could have been cut to spend more time with Carol and Therese, but I will admit that the final sequence was impeccably shot and the perfect emotional denouement. Easily one of the best finales of the year.
Overall, "Carol" is held up by Hayne's direction and the talent of its leads despite the hindrance of a routine script. 4/5.
