For a romantic drama, it doesn't really have much of either, but that doesn't detract from its quality. The relationship between Carol and Therese is quiet and understated. It doesn't feel very real and the characters aren't very fleshed out or distinct, but I think that's the point. What makes Carol great is the way it literally portrays a feeling. It's less about the characters and their journey and more about their romance itself.

Besides that the soundtrack is beautiful and the cinematography perfect for the setting and mood. It can get very boring at times and a lot of their romance is conveyed through long twilight-esque stares with music in the background, but no more than most meditative movies like this.

I personally loved it, but there are moments when I had to stop and ask why they were in love, since isn't shown very explicitly. It kind of took away from the emotion of the moment sometimes.

In the end, if you're into the artsy nuanced stuff, then this is perfect for you. If you're expecting a passionate relationship with heart wrenching drama, you're going to think this is a snore.
