Review of Carol (2015) by Peter A — 30 Nov 2015
Exit the theatre safe in the knowledge you have seen a film that could not be improved upon and, providing you enjoyed it, surely it has to scoop maximum marks. That was the case for me with Carol. It is a labour of love, an exercise in perfection on every level.
Cate Blanchett (surely she has to be in the reckoning for an Oscar for this), as the woman who knows what she wants but is reluctant to risk everything to get it, and Rooney Mara, as the hesitant rookie to lesbian love, are perfectly cast, complimenting each other throughout. Beautifully scripted, scored, filmed and directed, this film leaves no stone unturned as it trickles through its journey.
For those uncomfortable with the premise of lesbian scenes: the film is two hours in length and said scenes - sensitively shot after an agonising wait for ultimate commitment from the two ladies in question - totals no more than three minutes, by which time, we, as the audience, wish them nothing but good will. Ultimately, such is the depth here that a traditional love story may not have resulted in the same impact. This is a total delight!
