Review of Carol (2015) by Robin T — 18 Jan 2016
Cate Blanchette is luminous and amazing... Please make a back to back Oscar winner! The 50s setting is a character of its own that lends not just a time reference but a cultural one. This isn't just about two gay women but how married women navigate the institution of marriage/ownership by their husbands.
I also liked how no one was demonized because of their choices. Carol has abandoned her husband yet is a devoted loving mother; while you root for Carol, I felt for her abandoned husband who loves a woman who cannot love him.
Excellent color, cinematography and mood too. Enjoy!
