Review of Carol (2015) by Marilyn N — 12 Oct 2016
To say Carol has received universal plaudits/critical acclaim is an understatement. Just look at its critic metascore. However I found it very ordinary.
It is based on the 1952 novel The Price of Salt. That may shortly be going up but my estimation of this film probably won't.
It concerns 'forbidden' love in a 1950s New York between Carol (Cate Blanchett) and a young sales assistant in a department store called Therese (Rooney Mara) who the older Carol forms an instant bond with during a Christmas shopping trip.
Carol is married with a young daughter. The film basically shows the blossoming relationship between Carol and Therese and the inevitable marriage breakdown and custody battle for her daughter.
The film's 1950s setting during an era of Communist whichhunts in the US provides some of the films entertainment. The different attitudes. The smoking in restaurants. The cinematography on 16mm film helps.
The film starts extremely slowly. For the first twenty minutes I can't recall much happening. It just left me profoundly bored.
