Review of Carol (2015) by Marge L — 03 Jan 2016

We could analyze the characters for some time as neither of the main characters, Carol or Therese, could be said to be simple. That is, we don't really know what motivates them. The cinematography is simply stunning and Cate Blanchett embodies her character with complete beauty and suave, always literally picture perfect in the film itself and the photographs Therese takes of her. While the characters were at least somewhat intriguing, the connection between the two, beyond the possibly of merely a brief affair, was elusive. For a long term relationship, we're left with an incomplete sense of why these two are drawn to each other. Is Carol drawn to Therese for her beauty and youth? Is Therese drawn to Carol because of her lifestyle and glamor? There's never any depth to the conversation and their characters, while intriguing, could be said to be rather stereotyped.

I would like to give this film 3 3/4 stars but since there is no 3 3/4 option, it's been raised to 4 for the consistent visual quality in which every moment could be a photograph.
