Review of Carol (2015) by Joey T — 09 Jan 2016
2015 has been a terrific year for strong female characters and feminist stories. However, even with the competition, Carol manages to stand out. Terrific performances from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are heightened by excellent direction from Todd Haynes, who focuses more on visual storytelling here), and a wonderful screenplay that expresses the burden of ordinary lives for women. Women, even today, have been tied down by the fate of their male lovers and societal norms, and the movie expresses this with subtlety and class. Furthermore, it expresses that this is not a story about two lesbians falling in love; it's a story about two good people falling in love. That is the mindset that society needs to get to. That is what this movie is pushing for.
What a message, and what a movie. Easily one of the best of 2015.
