Review of Carol (1990) by Jim H — 07 Apr 2016
A woman stuck in an unhappy marriage falls in love with a department store clerk during the 1950s.
An acting master class, Carol's stars, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, give incredibly nuanced, heartfelt performances. Each actress has clear but subtly expressed scene objectives. The film should be shown to actors everywhere as an example of how it should be done.
The story, on the other hand, is a little thin. There are enough plot events, and when the film finally reaches its climax, I expected a bigger effect.
Overall, Blanchett and Mara are the reasons to see this film.
