Review of Carol (1970) by Christopher B — 16 Jan 2016
I cannot understand why this movie is being held up as being an example of superior movie-making. I found it aggravating. There are lots of long, loving looks exchanged between the two, but there is never the sense that either of them has the faintest idea who the other really is.
So why the deep devotion to each other? The audience is never told. In fact it's never clear why they are attracted to each other to begin with--the "opposites attract" thing doesn't work here either, because frankly, there is no clarity whether they are opposite or alike.
I had expected to like it, but instead found myself angry with the director for making the audience work so hard for so little payoff.
