Review of Carnival of Souls (1962) by Michael S — 04 May 2009
"Carnival of Souls" is spooky and worth seeing. There's a reason why so many directors cite this movie as an inspiration. The story doesn't seem like much, and yes, a lot of it is fairly obvious, but it still has that nice "Twilight Zone" feel to it.
..effectively stringing along its viewers while building a solidly eerie, isolated, and detached atmosphere. Most notably, the shots of the "lost souls" who haunt the main character, the visuals of the desolate, run-down carnival grounds, and the chilling organ music.
..all combine to ably send shivers down any spine. It's important to keep in mind the movie came out in 1962, and it was made on a tight budget within the time span of a month.
