Review of Carnage (2014) by Stacey O — 27 May 2013
Fantastic cast and a director who has a reputable history - combined together, and they miss the mark. "Carnage" wanted to be a Tennessee Williams-style wit-fest, but comes across as a pale, mimicking, waek copy instead.
None of the characters are likable or show any traits that have any redemption whatsoever. Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet both try to reach Elizabeth Taylor histrionics, but never get there. And how about a 79 minute play that gets interrupted every three minutes by an on-screen cell phone?!? EVERY TIME Christoph Waltz' character gets a cell call, it shuts down the interaction of the other characters so that the movie goes forward in short little bursts of (rather uninteresting) dialogue, until he gets his next phone call.
Hopefully the lesson learned here is that NO ONE can replicate what Tennessee Williams did with even a semblance of the passion and smart scripting that he did, and they shouldn't have tried in this case.
Ick.
